Text:
“Wenn ihr geturnt habt u. gerungen, u. wenn ihr frohe Lieder gesungen,
dann solt ihr auch beim Bier u. Wein, stets frisch, fromm, frei u. fröhlich sein.”

(When you’ve been doing gymnastics and wrestling, and when you’ve sung joyful songs,
then with beer and wine you should also always be fresh, pious, free and happy.)

The central portrait depicts Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or “Turnvater Jahn”, who is credited with responsibility for the rebirth of gymnastics in Germany during the early 19th century, and for development of gymnastics equipment such as the parallel bars and pommel horse. The “4F” symbol on the flag represents the tenets of the movement he began, standing for “Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei”.
