“Trumpeter of Säckingen”

Scene taken from a poem (Der Trompeter von Säckingen) written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel, which tells the story of a love affair between a trumpeter and a baron’s daughter. Central to the original version of this stein (shown at right) was an image based on an engraving entitled “Abschied” (Farewell) done in 1888 by Carl Schweninger (1854-1903). That image was later replaced with a different version of the scene shown below.
