Bowling Symbols

Catalog No. 1140

Pottery, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Gut Holz”
(Good wood)
“Des Keglers Kraft und Ideal bleibt stets die goldne Neunerzahl.”
(The bowler’s strength and ideal remain always the golden number nine.”
“Der Kegeljunge jauchzt in Freud, der Meister schwimmt in Seligkeit.”
(The pinboy cheers in joy, the master swims in bliss.)

The first text string (i.e., Gut Holz) is an idiomatic German expression often seen on bowling steins that also effectively means “good luck”. The pig (or Schwein) in the central image is German symbolism for good luck, or in this case a strike.
