“Hermann’s Battle”

Catalog No. 1151

Pottery, relief, 3.0L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Plötzlich aus des Waldes Duster brachen kampfhaft die Cherusker,
mit Gott für Fürst u. Vaterland stürtzen sie von Wutentbrannt auf die Legionen.”

(Suddenly from the dust of the forest the Cherusci broke fighting,
with God for prince and fatherland they threw themselves in a rage at the legions.)

Text is taken from poem entitled “Als die Römer frech geworden” (When the Romans Got Brazen), written in 1847 by Viktor von Scheffel.

“Hermann” (or “Arminius” as he was known to the Romans) successfully led an alliance of Germanic tribes in the crushing defeat of three Roman legions at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 A.D. The battle effectively put a permanent halt to the expansion plans of the Roman Empire into territories east of the Rhine river.
