und neues Leben blüht aus den Ruinen.”

(The old collapses, times are changing,
a new life blossoms in the ruins.)

Helvetia is a national personification of Switzerland dating back to the 17th century. Her shield, with its equilateral cross, was formally adopted as a symbol of Switzerland in 1889, but had existed in a variety of similar forms as early as the 13th century.

Text is from a play entitled “Wilhelm Tell”, written in 1804 by Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805). Tell is a legendary Swiss folk hero whose actions are said to have sparked a rebellion against Austrian (Hapsburg) rule that resulted in the formation of the (Old) Swiss Confederation in 1291.
