Bearded Man Jug with Portraits

Catalog No. 1369

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 2.25L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Ein froh Gemüt stimmt andre fröhlich.
Ein frischer Trunk macht uns glückselich.”

(A happy disposition makes others cheerful.
A fresh drink makes us very happy.)

This is an late 19th century interpretation of a Renaissance period form. First introduced around 1550, bearded man jugs (Bartmannkrüge) feature the face of a bearded man at the neck representing the mythical woodland Wild Man of Germanic folklore, a symbol of strength and endurance. The portraits surrounding this jug are most likely intended to represent characters from the Iliad, Homer’s epic poem set during the ten-year Trojan War.
