“Gymnast with Flag and Saying”

Catalog No. 315

Pottery, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Es lebe hoch die Turnerei,
sie macht uns stark, sie macht uns frei.”

(Long live gymnastics,
you make us strong, you make us free.)

The “4F” symbol seen in multiple places throughout this design represents a movement begun by centrally portrayed Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or “Turnvater Jahn”, who is credited with responsibility for organizing the first gymnastics clubs (Turn Vereine) in Germany during the early 19th century. The four Fs stand for “Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei” (Fresh, Pious, Happy, Free).
