Sir John Falstaff is one of the most famous comic characters in all English literature, appearing in four of Shakespeare’s plays and later in Giuseppe Verdi’s final opera Falstaff, which was inspired principally by Falstaff’s follies in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. This particular depiction, showing Falstaff with his drunken companion Bardolph, is taken from a painting by Eduard von Grützner (1846-1925).
