The portrait to the right of the centrally depicted athlete is of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or “Turnvater Jahn”, who is credited with responsibility for the rebirth of gymnastics in Germany during the early 19th century, and for development of gymnastics equipment such as the parallel bars and pommel horse. The “4F” symbol on the flag represents the tenets of the movement he began, standing for “Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei”.
