The bear was adopted as a heraldic symbol of the City of Berlin in 1709 and has evolved over the years into something of a city mascot.
A special order variation of this stein exists (below left) with writing on the shield commemorating the �Berliner Gewerbe Ausstellung 1896� (Berlin Industrial Exposition 1896).
