The tomcat (Kater) is both a German symbol and idiomatic expression for a hangover. How this lid inlay was intended to relate to the bicycling theme of the body is somewhat unclear, but a case can easily be made that it reflects the probable level of sobriety of the falling cyclist in the lithophane.
