The monkey, in Germany and elsewhere, has long been a symbol for excessive drinking, a problem from which the one depicted here appears to be suffering. To date, only a single example of this stein has appeared in the marketplace.
The base mark found on the pictured stein is indicative of production in the 1930s. Whether or not earlier examples exist is currently unknown.
