The central figure in this design is Germania, an ancient symbol personifying the strength, unity and liberty of Germanic peoples. In this ominous pre-WWI depiction, she is surrounded by allegorical images of Germany�s preparations for the upcoming �Great War� in which more than nine million combatants and seven million civilians would lose their lives.
