“Stets des Turners Wahlspruch sei frisch, fromm, fröhlich, frei.”
(Evermore the Gymnast’s motto is fresh, pious, happy, free.)
The portrait in the central image depicts Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or “Turnvater Jahn”, who is credited with responsibility for the rebirth of gymnastics in Germany during the early 19th century, and for development of gymnastics equipment such as the parallel bars and pommel horse. The “4F” symbol on the flag below his image represents the tenets of the movement he began, standing for “Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei”.
