Art Nouveau Munich Child

Catalog No. 719

Pottery or stoneware, etched, 1.0L, pewter lid.
Design attributed to Wilhelm Kamp.

“Wo man singt da lass dich ruhig nieder,
gibt’s gutes Bier so kehre wieder.”

(Where there is singing, let yourself relax,
there is good beer, so return again.)

Created as the coat-of-arms or archival seal of Munich in 1239, the centrally depicted Münchner Kindl (Munich Child) has evolved from a hooded monk standing in front of Munich’s gate to a charming child and symbol of the city.
