Catalog No. 1328
Pottery or stoneware, relief, 1.0L, pewter lid.
Original artwork attributed to Peter Dümler.
Edition: 10,000
A 1990 Thewalt catalog calls this piece a “Cherusker-Krug” (Cheruscan Stein), referring to the “Cherusci”, an early German tribe. In this well-known scene originally created by Peter Dümler, Hermann, a Cheruscan war lord, is seen “abducting” (“eloping with” would be more accurate) his future bride Thusnelda following his major victory as leader of an alliance of German tribes over three Roman legions at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 A.D.
