Originally built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries by Conrad von Hohenstaufen, the first Count Palatine, Heidelberg Castle served as the residence of Palatine Counts until its destruction by French troops in 1693. The ruins were partially restored in the late 19th century and today this popular tourist destination plays host to around a million visitors annually.
