“Singers”

Catalog No. 202

Pottery, relief, 1.0L or 0.5L, inlaid lid.
Design attributed to Ludwig Foltz II.

Text:
“In Deutscher Männerbrust, wohnt Sangeslust;
drum töne laut u. lang der’n Lobgesang.”

(In the breast of German men there exists the urge to sing,
therefore may their praise sound loud and long.)

The earliest examples of this stein were produced only in the one-liter size and had a somewhat different body configuration than the later and more commonly seen version shown at the right. The earlier steins can be found with a variety of painting schemes and figural lid inlays (bottom row).

Same model number applied to a stein depicting St. George and another depicting Renaissance Dancers.
