Railroad (Eisenbahn) units had a function similar to Engineer (Pionier) units, but focused on transportation by rail and the construction of rail lines. They were also charged with management of the telegraph system. Railroad Regiment No. 3 was garrisoned in Berlin.

The same transfer decoration (786) was also applied to steins made for Railroad Regiment No. 1 and Railroad Regiment No. 2.
