“Gooseman of Nuremberg”

Pottery, etched and relief, 0.5L or 0.25L, inlaid lid.

This stein depicts the central figure in the Gänsemännchen Brunnen (Gooseman Fountain) which graces the courtyard of City Hall in Nuremberg (Nürnburg). The statue of the Gooseman was cast in solid bronze by Pankraz Labenwolf in the 16th century.

Typically found with an etched Bavarian shield inlay (below right). More rare is the figural lion inlay found on the 0.5L size only.
