The society In Arte Libertas (In Art Liberty), founded in 1886 by Nino Costa, assembled an international group of artists who were at variance with what they considered provincialism in the official art policies of Rome. The society functioned until 1900, holding exhibitions and otherwise promoting freedom of artistic expression.
