Catalog No. 416

Pottery, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Einigkeit macht Stark!”
(Unity produces strength!)
“Lieb Vaterland, magst ruhig sein!”
(Dear Fatherland, rest easily!)

The central image on this stein, a winged woman dressed in Greek style clothing and clutching a laurel wreath, is based on the “Winged Victory of Samothrace”, a statue dating to around 190 B.C., found on the island of Samothrace and currently housed in the Louvre Museum, Paris.

Text beginning “Lieb Vaterland…” is the first line of the chorus from “Die Wacht am Rhein” (The Watch on the Rhine), a German patriotic anthem, written in 1840 by Max Schneckenburger and set to music in 1854 by Karl Wilhelm.
