“Lohengrin and Elsa”

Catalog No. 449

Pottery, relief, 0.4L, pewter lid.

The theme of this stein is taken from a medieval legend which tells the tale of the “Swan Knight”. Today, the story is most often associated with the Richard Wagner opera “Lohengrin”, first performed at Weimar in 1850. The central image is a detail from a larger scene in a painting by Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805-1874) entitled “Des Schwanenritters Abschied” (The Swan Knight’s Departure).

Master stein is No. 435. See also Nos. 409 and 450.
