It’s interesting to note that while early manufacturer’s catalogs describe the central figures on this stein as a “Fürstlichem Brautpaar” (Princely Couple), the image itself is a detail from a painting by Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805-1874) entitled “Des Schwanenritters Abschied” (The Swan Knight’s Departure), which depicts a scene generally associated with the Richard Wagner opera “Lohengrin”.
