Hunter Frog

Catalog No. 836

Pottery, figural, 0.5L (circa 1960).

“Willst du nicht dem Frosche gleich im Sumpf versinken,
steige in Gambrunus Reich wo volle Humpen winken.”

(If you don’t want to sink into the mud like a frog,
enter Gambrinus’ kingdom where full steins are beckoning.)

Text reference is to Gambrinus, “the king of beer”, long a universal symbol of beer and brewing. It has been suggested that the character may be drawn from the claimed real-life inventor of hopped malt beer, Jan Primus (Johann I), a 13th-century Belgian Duke and President of the Brussels Guild of Brewers.

Reproduced from J.W. Remy mold No. 973.

Price Range: $40-$60
