The centrally placed image is of Carolus Magnus (Charlemagne), king of the Franks from 768 and the first Holy Roman Emperor from 800 until his death in 814. Others include Julius Caesar, Alexander, Ramses, Arminius (a.k.a., Hermann the German) and Homer.
