Bowling Ball

Catalog No. 1236

Pottery, figural, 0.5L, figural inlaid lid (bowler on pig), ram handle.

Text:
Gut Holz, Keglers Glck u. Stolz Glatte Bahn.
(Good wood, a bowlers happiness and pride is a smooth lane.)

The term Gut Holz is an idiomatic German expression often seen on bowling steins that effectively means good luck.

The two animals that are part of this design both have meaning. The pig (or Schwein) on the lid is German symbolism for good luck, or in this case a strike. The ram (or Bock) that forms the handle is the symbol for Bockbier, a strong dark beer that is the first drawn from the vats in the springtime.
