Arnold von Winkelried is a legendary Swiss hero who is said to have sacrificed himself on the pikes of opposing soldiers in order to open a breach in the enemy line during the Battle of Sempach in 1386, allowing the (Old) Swiss Confederation to defeat an army of the Habsburg duke Leopold III of Austria.
