“Rütli Oath”

Catalog No. 162

Pottery, relief, 0.3L, pewter lid, signed “GT” (Gustav Thinwibel).

According to Swiss Legend, Rütli Meadow in Central Switzerland was the site of a 1307 meeting between representatives of the cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden, where they swore an oath providing the foundation upon which Swiss freedom from the Habsburg dynasty is based. However, a written alliance signed by representatives of the three cantons and dated August 1, 1291 was discovered in the 19th century that calls into question the historic importance of the Rütli meeting.
