Lohengrin’s Departure

Catalog No. 1611

Pottery, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.
Exists with music box in base (add 20%).

Text:
“Vollgefüllte Krüge leert man auf den Grund.
Schöne junge Frauen küßt man auf den Mund.”

(Full steins should be emptied down to the bottom.
Pretty young women should be kissed on the mouth.)

The theme of this stein is taken from a medieval legend which tells the tale of the “Swan Knight.” Today, the story is most often associated with the Richard Wagner opera “Lohengrin”, first performed at Weimar in 1850. In this scene, following the failure of his wife Elsa to keep her vow to never inquire about his name or descent, Lohengrin prepares to depart forever in his swan boat.
