Lohengrin’s Departure

Catalog No. 1612

Pottery, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Viel besser krähet jeder Hahn
wenn er die Kehle feuchtet an.”

(Every rooster crows much better
when he moistens the throat.)

The theme of this stein is taken from a medieval legend which tells the tale of the “Swan Knight.” Today, the story is most often associated with the Richard Wagner opera “Lohengrin”, first performed at Weimar in 1850. In this scene, following the failure of his wife Elsa to keep her vow to never inquire about his name or descent, Lohengrin prepares to depart forever in his swan boat.
