“Lieb’ Vaterland, magst ruhig sein,
fest steht und treu die Wacht, die Wacht am Rhein!”

(Dear fatherland, rest easily,
solid and true stands the watch, the watch on the Rhine!)

German text is the chorus from “Die Wacht am Rhein” (The Watch on the Rhine), a patriotic anthem, written in 1840 by Max Schneckenburger and set to music in 1854 by Karl Wilhelm.

This stein can also be found with a Bavarian coat-of-arms replacing the imperial eagle (below left).
