German text is the chorus from �Die Wacht am Rhein� (The Watch on the Rhine), a patriotic anthem, written in 1840 by Max Schneckenburger and set to music in 1854 by Karl Wilhelm.

This stein can also be found with a Bavarian coat-of-arms replacing the imperial eagle (below left).
