“The Seven Electors on Lake Walen”

Catalog No. 1769

Pottery, relief, 0.5L, figural inlaid lid.

Taking its name from the seven Electors of the Holy Roman Empire, the seven peaks of the Alpine Kurfürsten (Electors) mountain range lie on the northeast end of Switzerland’s Lake Walen (Walensee).

The Prince Electors (or simply Electors) were a group of seven (later nine) leading figures from both church and state who selected the Holy Roman Emperor. This system was established in the 13th century and remained in place until 1806 when the Holy Roman Empire was formally dissolved.
