Die Walküre (The Valkyrie) was the second opera in Richard Wagner’s monumental cycle of four musical dramas, collectively entitled Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelungs). In this scene from the third act, the valkyrie Brünihilde begs for mercy from her father Wotan (the chief god) after disobeying his instructions by attempting to spare the hero Siegmund, whose death Wotan had preordained.
