A Schützenliesel was a waitress at German shooting matches (Schützenfeste), which were popular social events during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The popular conception of the Schützenliesel is drawn from an 1881 painting by Friedrich von Kaulbach, depicting a waitress at Munich’s Sterneckerbräu brewery in native dress with a target-shaped hat and her hands full of overflowing beer steins (below right).
