“Gambrinus in His Kingdom”

Catalog No. 2107

Stoneware, etched and relief, 2.25L or 1.5L, inlaid lid, signed by H. Schlitt.

Text:
“Gambrinus Rex”
(King Gambrinus)
“Auch wenn die Anderen alle schwanken
dein Thron steht fest und ohne Wanken.”

(Even though the others all tremble,
your throne is steady and does not sway.)

Gambrinus, “the king of beer”, has long been a universal symbol of beer and brewing. It has been suggested that the character may be drawn from the claimed real-life inventor of hopped malt beer, Jan Primus (Johann I), a 13th-century Belgian Duke and President of the Brussels Guild of Brewers.
