The scenes surrounding this stein are all taken from Josef Viktor von Scheffel’s famous series of “Rodensteinliedern” (Rodenstein Songs). Selection and placement will vary, and may include: “Rodenstein” (right), a very serious drinker who donates an entire town to Heidelberg University; “Perkeo” (below left), the legendary dwarf of Heidelberg castle; “Hildebrand and Hadubrand” (below right), the tragic father and son warriors; “Altassyrisch” or “Old Assyrian” (bottom left), the story of a wandering student who eats and drinks at a tavern named the Black Whale but cannot pay the bill; and “Der Enderle von Ketsch” (bottom right), a tale of a ghost sailing the sea.
