�Alt Heidelberg du feine, du Stadt an Ehren reich.�
(Old Heidelberg you fine city, rich in honors.)

Text is taken from a poem honoring Heidelberg, written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel and set to music in 1872 by Weise von Zimmerman.

Toward the rear of the stein are depictions of two legendary characters associated with the city of Heidelberg: �Herr von Rodenstein� (below left), a serious imbiber and the leading character in another von Scheffel poem entitled �Die Drei D�rfer� (The Three Villages), and �der Zwerg Perkeo� (below right), the wine-drinking dwarf of Heidelberg castle.
