“German and Roman War”

Catalog No. 57

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 1.0L, inlaid (stoneware only) or pewter lid.
Produced both with and without pouring spout.

Text:
“Und sie tranken noch eins ehe sie gingen.”
(And they drank one more before they left.)

The manufacturer’s title reference is almost certainly to the Battle of Teutoburg Forest (9 A.D.), a recurring theme in the art of Peter Dümler. The battle was a major defeat for the Roman Empire, resulting the the annihilation of three Roman legions and permanently halting Roman expansion into territories east of the Rhine River.
