Catalog No. 58

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 3.0L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Die Alten Germanen”
(The Old Germans)

Although the text above the central image on pottery examples reads simply “The Old Germans”, the image is called “Cheruskan Battle Scene” in the manufacturer’s catalog, making reference to the Cherusci (or Cheruski) tribe, one of the principal participants in the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 A.D., which resulted in a permanent halt to the expansion plans of the Roman Empire into territories east of the Rhine river.

A version of this stein exists with copper plating and on both the body and lid (below center) and bearing the mark “Patent LT/M” (L.Thannemann & Cie, München) on the base.
