(The Old Germans)

Although the text above the central image on pottery examples reads simply “The Old Germans”, the image is called “Cheruskan Battle Scene” in the manufacturer’s catalog, making reference to the Cherusci (or Cheruski) tribe, one of the principal participants in the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 A.D., which resulted in a permanent halt to the expansion plans of the Roman Empire into territories east of the Rhine river.

A variation of this stein can be found with copper plating (below center) and bearing the mark “Patent LT/M” (L. Thannemann & Cie, München, a Munich finishing shop and distributor).
