Although the text above the central image on pottery examples reads simply �The Old Germans�, the image is called �Cheruskan Battle Scene� in the manufacturer�s catalog, making reference to the Cherusci (or Cheruski) tribe, one of the principal participants in the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 A.D., which resulted in a permanent halt to the expansion plans of the Roman Empire into territories east of the Rhine river.

A variation of this stein can be found with copper plating (below center) and bearing the mark �Patent LT/M� (L. Thannemann & Cie, M�nchen, a Munich finishing shop and distributor).
