Franz Defregger (1835-1921) was a Munich artist and professor whose depictions of Tyrolean life have come to symbolize the genre and are often seen on beer steins.
A special order version of this stein (below right) was produced for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, with a revised central image and text reading “Tyrol in St. Louis”. Additional D&B steins known to have been produced for the Fair include Nos. 268, 366, 456, 458, 523 and 575.
