“Seid ihr vereint in fröhlicher Runde,
so feiert beim Bierkrug die schöne Stunde.”
(If you are together in happy company,
celebrate the pleasant hour with beer steins.)
Franz Defregger (1835-1921) was a Munich artist and professor whose depictions of Tyrolean life have come to symbolize the genre and are often seen on beer steins.
A special order version of this stein (below left) was produced for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, with a revised central image and text reading “Tyrolerdorf (Tyrolean Village) in St. Louis”. Additional D&B steins known to have been produced for the Fair include Nos. 268, 366, 406, 456, 458 and 523.
St. Louis: $200-$300
