Scene taken from a poem entitled “The Trumpeter of Säckingen”, written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel, which tells the story of a love affair between a trumpeter and a baron’s daughter. Original engraving entitled “Die Überrashung” (The Surprise) done in 1888 by Carl Schweninger (1854-1903).
Second in a set of six, with 1524, 1526, 1527, 1528 and 1529. Master stein is No. 1504. See also Nos. 102, 224 and 315.
