“Alexander in Front of Diogenes”

Catalog No. 2383

Pottery, etched (Etruscan style), 4.15L, inlaid lid, signed by H. Schlitt.

Well before setting out to conquer the world, Alexander, then Prince of Macedonia, is known to have met in the Greek city of Corinth with an elderly Diogenes, leader of the Cynics, who believed that only by depriving oneself of everything that is superfluous could a person hope to be free of desire and therefore unhappiness. This stein presents a humorous depiction of that encounter.
